Hollygrove Opens After-School Program in Response to Community’s Need

Karen Rosen to Manage Successful Summer Program Year-Round

HOLLYWOOD, CA October, 18, 2011 –  Hollygrove today welcomes the first students into its “Endless Summer” year-round after-school program, a continuation of its successful therapeutic day camps. This after-school program was developed to meet the unique needs of special education students in the local community. Karen Rosen, previously principal of the nonpublic school at Hollygrove, has returned to coordinate the educational component of the new “Endless Summer” after-school program. Hollygrove is part of EMQ FamiliesFirst, California’s largest children’s behavioral health services provider (http://www.hollygrove.org/).

We decided to build on the continued success of Camp Hollygrove, our summer and holiday therapeutic day camp, in response to an unmet and urgent need in the community,” said Martine Singer, executive director at Hollygrove. “We are committed to meeting the behavioral and academic needs of special education students with a high-quality program and we are relying entirely on private donations to cover our costs.”

Special education students have even fewer opportunities for tutoring and enrichment than most children,” continued Singer, “and we are thrilled that someone as talented and dedicated as Karen is available to head up the program, which will be on-site at our Hollywood campus. Endless Summer gives us the opportunity to help even more children in the community.” The after-school program offers therapeutic and enrichment activities along with a focus on literacy and school achievement.

Rosen was at Hollygrove previously as principal and special education teacher for the Hollygrove Nonpublic School. Since then, Rosen was transition program coordinator and academic dean for the Hillsides Education Center nonpublic school in Pasadena, CA and educational therapist and special education teacher at Kayne-ERAS Center in Culver City, CA. Rosen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal Communications from Tulane University, a Master of Arts in Special Education from Loyola Marymount University and an Education Specialist credential from National University, Los Angeles.

Rosen will also oversee the agency’s volunteer tutoring/homework program.
